Gilmore would support councils cutting property tax by 15 per cent

first_imgTÁNAISTE EAMON GILMORE has said he would support councils in highly populated urban areas if they decide to implement a cut of up to 15 per cent to the property tax.Gilmore said today that this option was already in the legislation and this would be at the discretion of each individual local authority. This year, 80 per cent of the money collected through the tax is supposed to be retained by local authorities to fund services.Speaking on RTÉ’s This Week programme, the Tánaiste said “those authorities where property values are higher, densities are high and therefore income to them is high, will be able to reduce it by 15 per cent.He said the Labour Party “supports that” and it is a policy that will be followed by Labour councillors following the local election.“I expect that where councils are led by the Labour Party after the local election, the Labour Party will pursue this policy in these local authorities,” he added.Read: €1 million deducted from social welfare benefits to pay property tax>Read: Your questions about the local property tax answered>last_img
