[email protected] Bio Latest Posts Latest posts by Hugh Bowden (see all) Is this the kind of government we deserve? – July 10, 2017 123456PreviousNext ELLSWORTH — When it comes to the Penobscot Valley Conference spring sports, Hancock County has six players of the year for 2012.Claiming the top softball honors in the conference were second baseman Sadie Wight of the Bucksport Golden Bucks and pitcher Sydney Ouzts of the Deer Isle-Stonington Mariners.In tennis, Mea Clark of the Mount Desert Island Trojans in Class B and Sotherd Steer of the George Stevens Academy  Eagles in Class C were chosen on the girls’ side, and Tyler Small of the Class B Ellsworth Eagles and Johnny Xue of Class C GSA on the boys’ side.Were the 2012 PVC Class C softball all-stars ever to take the field, the purple and gold of Bucksport would be seen at as many as seven of the positions.This is placeholder textThis is placeholder textLed by Wight, the Golden Bucks placed eight players on the PVC first team, and another on the second team, with Bucksport coach Mike Carrier named PVC Class C Coach of the Year.Wight, a graduating senior, had a team-leading batting average of .630 and hit five home runs and drove in 35 runs for the Golden Bucks during the regular season.Other Bucksport first-teamers include catcher Mindy Pye (.606, five homers, 29 RBI), first baseman Bailey Blair (.602, one homer, 33 RBI), shortstop Shelby Redman (.453), third baseman Kacie Hurd (447), outfielder Brianna Bires (.462), designated hitter Debbie Wight (.500) and 20-0 pitcher Cassidy Adams, who struck out 182 batters, threw 14 shutouts and allowed just 10 runs.Named to the second team were outfielders Jen Wight of Bucksport and Mary Prescott of the George Stevens Academy Eagles.In Class B softball, third baseman Ashlee Leighton-Bragg of the Ellsworth Eagles and catcher Shelby O’Neil of the Mount Desert Island Trojans earned first-team honors, and Ellsworth catcher Cristin Wright and MDI pitcher Hannah Shaw were named to the second team.In Class D softball, Ouzts capped a three-year career with the Deer Isle-Stonington Mariners that saw her rack up 35 wins and notch more than 500 strikeouts.Other Mariners joining her on the PVC first team were shortstop Janelle Ciomei, outfielders Moriah Nutter and Chelsea Brown and designated hitter Amber Jones.A dozen county players were named PVC all-stars in baseball for 2012.In Class B, first team honors went to Caleb MacDonald and Ben Walls of the Mount Desert Island Trojans, and Kyle Haslam of the Ellsworth Eagles was a second team selection.In Class C, third baseman Schuyler Van der Eb and outfielder Mike Cummings of the Bucksport Golden Bucks were named to the first team, and first baseman Ben Olivari, designated hitter Gavin Rogers and utility player Marriner Cheney, all of GSA, and pitcher Gabe Stearns of Bucksport were chosen for the second team.DI-Stonington Mariners named to the first team in Class D were third baseman Joe Condon, outfielder Nate Davis and pitcher Sam Grindle.Turning to tennis:For Class B girls, Clark and Julia Christie of the Trojans earned first team honors in singles and Jessica Toothaker and Rachel Ball of Ellsworth in doubles; Ellsworth’s Ashley Harding in singles and Sarah Shelton and Olivia Mora in doubles and MDI’s Madeline Cook and Caroline Brown in doubles were named to the second team; and Ina Maloney of Ellsworth received honorable mention.For Class C girls, Steer and GSA’s doubles duo of Ramsey Williamson and Grace Bugbee and Esther Adams of the Deer Isle-Stonington Mariners earned first team honors; Maddi Theoharidis of GSA was a second team selection; Charlotte Reiter of GSA was named on the third team; and Sumner’s Brianna Fernandez and Lizzie Arey received honorable mention.For Class B boys, Ellsworth’s Small at singles and Brandan Albee and Dustin Murphy at doubles, and MDI’s doubles duo of Andrew Dalton and Caleb Cough were first team selections; Dillon Toothaker at singles and Alec and Evan Toothaker at doubles were named to the second team; and Tyler Beardsley received honorable mention.For Class C boys, GSA dominated the first team, with  Xue and Jasper Adam selected in singles and the duos of Jason Gao and Roy Xu and Nick Dillon and Ed Lamayer named in doubles.Named to the second team were Ole Bartos and Drew Siebert of the DI_S Mariners; GSA’s Alex Heilner was a third team selection; and Sumner’s Jason Smith and Braden Wentworth received honorable mentions.Earning girls’ all-academic honors in tennis were Christie, Dylan Stillman and Mia Musetti of MDI; Steer, Bugbee, Theoharidis and Williamson of GSA; Fernandez of Sumner; and Adams of DI-Stonington.GSA’s Gao and Xu received boys’ all-academic honors in tennis.For more sports news, pick up a copy of the Mount Desert Islander.
